Dr. Stephen E. Flynn named president of Center for National Policy

Dr. Stephen E. Flynn will become president of the Center for National Policy Jan. 1, 2010, the non-partisan public policy organization announced Thursday.

As a senior fellow at the related think tank Council on Foreign Relations, Flynn is an outspoken critic of U.S. homeland security policy. He has written two books, "America the Vulnerable" in 2004, and "The Edge of Disaster: Rebuilding a Resilient Nation" in 2007, along with dozens of articles in popular and scholarly publications.

Flynn said that at CNP he plans to focus on national infrastructure and environmental issues as well as security.

"The one thing we can safely predict about the future is that Americans will be confronted by man-made and natural threats," Flynn said. "Today, our national security, economic competitiveness, and ecological sustainability hinges on whether we can muster the political will to reverse the reckless neglect of our nation's infrastructure."

Flynn will be the sixth president of CNP, and the first who is not a former cabinet official or member of Congress. He succeeds former Rep. Tim Roemer, D-Ind., who was recently appointed ambassador to India.
