Homeland Security


A key element of any comprehensive national security strategy must include be a resilient and thoughtful strategy to secure the homeland. Securing ports, integrating communities, better equipping first responders, and all of the other elements of a secure homeland necessarily present policymakers with a series of trade-offs, and CNP continues to host expert speakers and put forth ideas on how to best deal with these challenges.


  • The Center for National Policy hosted Cosmo Perrone and Bethann Rooney for a discussion on specific improvements that have been made to protect America's port complexes since 9/11 and the top priorities for future enhancements.

  • Homeland Security expert Steve Flynn, Council on Foreign Relations, spoke about the imperative for the Obama administration to assign greater priority to homeland security but recommended an approach that moves beyond a narrow focus on terrorism and instead emphasizes building societal resilience to better manage the risks and consequences arising from major natural disasters as well as man-made ones.

  • The Center for National Policy hosted Governor Martin O'Malley for a discussion about his recommendations for "best practices" in homeland security policy. He also highlighted innovative and effective policies that have helped enhance the safety of Maryland.

  • CNP welcomed former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff for an off the record discussion about the overall approach to homeland security issues over the past several years and which outstanding issues remain to be addressed.

  • A CNP discussion with Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski and General Brent Scowcroft.

  • A CNP discussion with Senator Bob Graham and Robin Cleveland.
