Homeland Security
Washington, D.C. – On September 10, 2010, one day before the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, CNP President Dr. Stephen Flynn will join with former 9/11 Commission Chair and Vice Chair Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton, and Dr. Bruce Hoffman, Georgetown University, to discuss a new report on the current state of the terrorist threat against the United States. The press conference will be held at the National Press Club at 10:00 a.m. The event is being organized by the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), the host for the National Security Preparedness Group (NSPG) co-chaired by Governor Kean and Congressman Hamilton, of which Dr. Flynn is a member.
Following remarks by Governor Kean and Congressman Hamilton, Dr. Hoffman and Dr. Flynn will discuss the new report, "Assessing the Terrorist Threat." The report details how the terrorist threat has evolved since the attacks in 2001, including the disturbing development of homegrown networks and the increasingly diverse and decentralized nature of terrorism. Dr. Flynn will discuss the implications of the report's findings for the U.S. government and how strengthening national resilience can work to redefine our homeland security and national security policies and tools to meet this evolving terrorist threat. For the last year, Governor Kean, Congressman Hamilton and members of the NSPG have been meeting with top intelligence, law enforcement, and homeland security officials to assess how the threat has changed in recent years.
The NSPG is composed of a distinguished bipartisan group of experts including former U.S. Secretary of Energy and U.S. Senator E. Spencer Abraham, noted terrorism analyst Peter Bergen, Dr. Stephen Flynn, former National Intelligence Council chairman Dr. John Gannon, Dr. Bruce Hoffman, former Congressman Dave McCurdy, former Attorney General Edwin Meese III, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security and Governor of Pennsylvania Tom Ridge, Frances Townsend, former U.S. Attorney General Richard L. Thornburgh, former Congressman Jim Turner, and former Secretary of Agriculture and BPC Senior Fellow Dan Glickman. Michael Allen, formerly of the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council, is the Executive Director.
Governor Kean, Congressman Hamilton, Dr. Flynn, and Dr. Hoffman will take questions at the press conference and will be available for interviews following the event.
